Catellani & Smith lights up the outdoor spaces, at Light + Building 2016 23.02.2016
Enzo Catellani has designed his first collection of outdoor lamps for Catellani & Smith’s participation at the Light +Building 2016 trade fair in Frankfurt. Nowadays, living spaces are moving outside into terraces and gardens, creating extensions of the house. This has given rise to the need to produce lighting fixtures that are able to recreate the same warmth and atmosphere as indoor lights.
We could say that our goal was to create a collection of indoor lamps suitable for outdoor installation.
Glass plays a starring role in this collection. An industrial glass has been used, which is shaped by hand – as with all processes on Catellani & Smith lamps – before being completely cooled.
Obviously, beauty is combined with the latest technology for outdoor lighting.
The most striking piece in the collection is ‘Medusa’, a light made of two overlapping glass hemispheres. When switched off the light is green, perfectly complementing the surrounding landscape; when switched on it turns white.
In cooperation with Architettura Sonora, Medusa is also available with integrated audio speakers, thereby creating a high fidelity object which has been crafted using the characteristic manual techniques that make each Catellani & Smith piece unique.
Gocce di Luce (drops of light), also made of industrial glass shaped by hand, supported by an oxidized copper rod, seem to emerge from the surrounding landscape. Moving with each gust of wind, the drops become the fruits of a tree. This unique piece was created by Enzo Catellani in 2005. Its copper trunk, in several shades of colour, takes us back to the magical nature of the past.
